Kaspersky - Brazil, Mexico remain top IT security threats, but attack types seen varying

Brazil and Mexico continue to represent the Latin American countries that generate the highest amount of malicious code, but the types of attacks coming from both geographies are seen diverging, Russian antivirus software developer Kaspersky Laboratories' virus analyst for Latin America, Dmitry Bestuzhev, told BNamericas.

Whereas Brazilian malware tends to be more focused on stealing information from online banking users, Kaspersky has detected several large botnets in Mexico that carried out attacks such as denial of service (DOS).

A boom in internet banking coupled with especially weak and antiquated IT safety regulations have lured hackers to Brazilian banking customers in droves, Bestuzhev said. Meanwhile, hackers in Mexico are most likely following the lead of cybercriminals in other countries that use botnets for monetary gain.
